I am a senior, retired and living in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. I have 4 adult children and 4 grandchildren.

Some might say that I am obsessed with healthy eating and BMI. They are right! After reading many books and Internet sites dealing with nutrition, health, and diets I found the Mayo Clinic Diet Program, with some modifications,  suited me the best.

This focus on nutrition started about ten years ago. I was a high school teacher and noticed that during the summer vacation I could lose weight because I ate smarter and healthier. Once I was back at work, my weight would climb to as much as 35 pounds over my recommended normal weight based on BMI. What I, and my working wife, needed was an approach that prepared a healthy dinner quickly, let’s say within 30 to 45 minutes.

I read a lot and surfed the Internet to eventually came up with a strategy for each meal. These strategies are shown in this blog’s banner. In addition, I analyzed and then grouped foods into three categories – best, better, and good, which is also included in the banner.

I retired last year, June 30, 2009, and since then I have followed the number of servings recommended by Mayo Clinic for 1800 calories per day.  I use an Excel worksheet to keep track of my weight and servings daily. I have developed a list of “Healthy & Quick” dinners based on my “Dinner Strategy”. I have tested many recipes and recorded over 312 recipes in this list. That’s a magic number since it represents a year’s worth of healthy recipes based on my 6 day strategy.  I am no longer as driven to uncover healthy recipes as I was at the beginning. We are now following the dinner plan day by day.

During June of 2010 I reached my “normal” weight range based on BMI. I am 10 pounds below my weight on the day I got married. That was over 40 years ago and I was in pretty good shape.

My waist has dropped from 40 to 34 inches! There’s only one drawback – only my socks and shoes fit properly, so I have to spend more on a new wardrobe.
